IEEE 1394 interface is a serial standard developed by Apple. As same with USB, IEEE 1394 interface also support hot plug peripherals which can provide power for peripherals, eliminate the need for peripheral own power and it can connect many different devices, support synchronous data transfer.
IEEE 1394 interface is divided into two kinds addording to transmission: Backplane mode and Cable modes. The minimum rate of Backplane mode is higher than the maximum speed USB1.1, respectively to 12.5 Mbps/s, 25 Mbps / s, 50 Mbps/s, it can be apply to the majority of high-bandwidth. Cable mode is very fast model which can be divided into 100 Mbps /s, 200 Mbps / s and 400 Mbps/s. In the 200Mbps/s circumstance,IEEE 1394 interfacecan transmitt high-quality movies without data compression.
Compared with USB interface, in the early USB1.1 times, 1394a interface accounts for a substantial speed advantage in the introduction of USB2.0, 1394a interface advantages of speed is no longer so obvious. At the same time, a majority of mainstream computer is not not configured with IEEE 1394 interface. If we want to use, we must purchase related interface card that will add the expenses. A simple interface to the external optical storage 1394 basic is few at present, most are also IEEE 1394 interfaces and USB interfaces with a multi-interface products which is more flexible and convenient.
